COMMUNITY BUNTING FLAG PROJECT

The first bunting flag workshop took place on Saturday May 20th with the Killarney Youth. The Killarney sewing club had saved the old children's parachute and taken it apart by section to repurpose it. They donated this brightly coloured nylon fabric for the Art Carnivale to create the bunting flags.

With the Youth using a template to cut out the triangles from the parachute fabric, and artist Amanda Lye assisting them to sew them on to the bias tape we created over ten meters for the first row of bunting flags. With the bright colours they look stunning! Also the fact that the community is making these bunting flags as a decoration that can  be reused for other events in the future is eco-friendly and resourceful.

The next Bunting Flag workshop will take place on Saturday June 3rd at Killarney Centre. Rebecca from the EartHand collective has also donated fabrics to create more bunting flags and to assist in making the KILLARNEY banner. She will be joining us in the next workshop as well.

Joe Chatsis Cree Hooping Dancer and The Culture Saves Lives Pow Wow Drummers

Joe Chatsis performing a hooping dance. Here is 13 hoops in a formation of a bird. Johnny Sam and the Culture Saves Lives Pow Wow Drummers getting warmed up with their first song. After going through the hoops and weaving in and out Joe created these globes with the hoops. What a talent to share with us. Thank you Joe! With Killarney pool in the background Joe is using the hoops and his body to create formations. We were applauding Joe's Hooping Dance and then the Pow Wow Drummers said one more song...  Joe led us in one last dance called "the friendship circle" where we all held hand and stepped with our right foot and did a small jump and shuffled our left foot. We got pretty good momentum and staff and board members joined in too. It was a lovely way to end the outdoor event. We were all tired from the heat but had a fun time together.  Thank you for coming to the Art Carnivale and making it a special day at Killarn...

JOE CHATSIS - CREE HOOP DANCER and JOHN SAM - POW WOW DRUMMER

Hooping Artist Joe Chatsis lives in Vancouver and is from the Cree First Nations. He does hooping dance to the beat of the Pow Wow drum. John Sam will be his accompaniment at the Killarney Art Carnivale on July 8th, with some Pow Wow singers. This is Joe at the Hastings Community space performing with his hoops as part of #culturesaveslives in the DTES. With his different formations he can do up to 21 hoops! This is quite the accomplishment. He wears hooping regalia and here he is teaching Randi Obenauer. The Killarney Community is looking forward to learning a few moves from Joe.
